My wife and I were thinking of getting VW Jetta Sportswagen TDI but decided to wait on Subaru's Boxer Diesel that's coming this year. We always wanted an AWD vehicles and we're not fans of big behemoth that are gasoholics.

How was it?

I have test driven (in Finland) a 2010 Legacy stationwagon, a 2010 Outback and a 2009 Forester all were Boxer Diesels. I have owned Opel(GM), VW, Volvo, and Mercedes diesels so I have a bit of Diesel experience. The Boxer was quieter and had much less vibration then other diesels I have driven. It also seemed to be very willing to rev more like a gasoline engine than a diesel. Suffice it to say that it (the boxer diesel)impressed me enough so that I have a 2010 Forester Boxer Diesel on order and am anxiously awaiting delivery.

Have owned a Legacy Diesel for 2 years, now done 56,000 miles - average consumption 48 mpg (Imperial).

Needed front pads and discs at 48000 service - dealer servicing very expensive.

Car totally reliable once teething problem of turbo hose blowing off in first 500 miles fixed.

Brilliant in deep snow although I do use snow tyres in the winter.

Aircon a little unstable, had the same problem with my last 3 Subarus so not specific to this model.

Reports of clutches not lasting if towing or abused in any way.

same situation here regarding the air con thing. As if this air con on Subaru are like batteries they wear off easily. But when I had that problem it was winter so it was kinda luck for me since I don't need to use the air con since the temperature is fine.

Any questions about the 2010 legacy wagon diesel?
have owned one since the middle of february.Great car so far,needed a bit more power so i have tuned it to 190 horses and 416nm,they sell these tuning boxes here in Sweden at the Subaru agents and was told it wont mess with the warranty! why not do it then? the car has now 6000km on it and it is getting smoother to drive and change gears.was a bit of a tight gearbox when new but has loosened up nicely.

I would still repair and upgrade my vehicle even if I can't avail the warranty anymore. The only purpose of the warranty is when your vehicle is always damaged and needed to be repaired. But if your car is as smooth and its going quite well then the warranty will just expire.

Clive, can you post up some more info on thise tuning boxes? Who is the manufacturer? I'm looking at getting one in the next 6-9 months once warranty runs out.

Have seen various ones online varying in price from €450 up to nearly €1000
